How it all started

So, here’s how it all began — I looked at my dining table one day and thought, “Wow, this thing looks pretty dull.”
I wanted something with character, something that felt warm and natural.
Then I checked the prices for a solid wood table… and my jaw dropped. Way too expensive!
That’s when I thought, “Why not make it myself?”
I wanted a table that shows off the beauty of the wood grain — something handmade and personal.

木のぬくもりを感じるようなテーブルがほしくて調べたら、無垢材のテーブルってびっくりするほど高い！

Falling into the DIY rabbit hole

Once I started watching DIY videos online, I was hooked.
It’s fascinating to see how people in different countries build things — their tools, techniques, even their mindset.
Both Japan and the U.K. have totally unique DIY cultures, and I found that really inspiring.

国によって使う道具や作り方、考え方がまったく違うのが面白くて。
日本とイギリス、それぞれに独自のDIY文化があることを知って、ますます惹かれました。

Japan: “Out with the old, in with the new”

In Japan, the usual approach is to take out the old stuff and replace it with something new.
Old sink? Replace it. Outdated flooring? Tear it up and start fresh.
It’s all about that clean, minimal, brand-new feeling — maybe because our homes are smaller and space efficiency matters.

日本では、古くなったものを取り外して新しいものに交換するのが一般的ですよね。
古い流し台や床も「取り替え＝リフレッシュ」という感覚。
コンパクトな住まいが多いからこそ、清潔で効率的な空間を重視するのかもしれません。

The U.K.: “Give it a second life”

In the U.K., it’s a bit different.
People love giving old things a second chance — sanding down vintage furniture, repainting old doors, or fixing up old windows.
They don’t see scratches or faded paint as flaws — they see character.
And honestly, I love that mindset.

イギリスでは少し違って、古いものを生まれ変わらせる文化があります。
ヴィンテージ家具を削って磨いたり、古いドアを塗り直したり。
キズや色あせも「味」として受け止めているんです。
その考え方、とても素敵だと思います。

What I’ve learned through DIY

Doing DIY has taught me a lot more than how to use a power tool.
It’s made me think about how we see “old” and “new.”
Japan’s clean, modern look has its charm, but so does the U.K.’s respect for history and imperfection.
Maybe the best approach is a mix of both — reuse what you can, and replace what you must.

DIYを通して学んだのは、工具の使い方だけじゃありません。
「古い」と「新しい」の価値観そのものについて考えるようになりました。
日本の清潔で機能的な美しさも、イギリスの古さを受け入れる美しさも、どちらも魅力的。
これからは「残せるものは残し、必要なものだけ新しく」していきたいです。
